World Hepatitis Day on July 28th! Think of it as a special day each year when people all over the world come together to talk about hepatitis.
What is Hepatitis?
Hepatitis is a sneaky illness that attacks your liver. It’s caused by different viruses (like Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E). If left untreated, it can cause severe illness and possibly cancer. Millions of people have it, although many don’t even realize it.
Why is this day so important?
- Spreading the Word: We want everyone to know about hepatitis. Many people have it and are unaware of it, which prevents them from receiving the necessary assistance.
- Staying Safe: This day reminds us of measures to prevent hepatitis, such as being vaccinated (for certain forms) and being cautious with needles.
- Getting Tested, Getting Treated: There are effective therapies for hepatitis, including a cure for Hepatitis C! However, people need to know that they can be diagnosed and treated.
- Breaking Down Walls: Sometimes people feel ashamed or have difficulty accessing care. This day helps us fight that.
- Working Towards a Goal: The world has a great goal: eradicate hepatitis by 2030. World Hepatitis Day encourages us to continue working toward this goal.
The subject for this year is “breaking down” the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking assistance. The goal is to make testing and treatment more accessible to everybody.
Let’s all learn a little bit more about hepatitis on July 28th. It’s wise to get tested if you believe you may be at risk. We can all do our part to change things!
